What happens when a volcano erupts in Iceland? Well, somehow it causes an extension to our 2-year European tour! Funny now, but at the time we were slightly annoyed. What did it mean to our children - well, as evidenced in the photos below, it meant a lot of ice cream :)
On April 14th when Eyjafjoll in Iceland began erupting for the 2nd time in several weeks a huge ash plume was created that ended up blanketing much of Europe. Flights entering and leaving European airspace were cancelled between the 15th and 20th, creating the highest level of air travel disruption since World War II.
We were supposed to depart Budapest on April 20th. Needless to say, we were "grounded" a while longer - thank goodness we had a nice 2 bedroom extended-stay hotel! We left a few days late, but were lucky enough to have more time with sweet friends who kept having to say "goodbye" over and over again! Below are some pictures from our "volcanic extension".
